Carol Hocknell – Passap Techniques

Enjoy two days exploring the Passap Machine. Hints and tips which you may not have yet thought of. This Machine is capable of so much and creates beautiful fabrics. Hands on.

Iris Bishop – Hands on Workshop
Mon April 21st to Fri April 25th 10.00am to 4.00pm

Another new Course for Metropolitan. A first opportunity to work with Iris on an individual basis. This Course is hands on experimenting with fabric and colour in preparation for textiles and garments. You may wish to work on the construction of a garment Iris has designed or you may prefer to experiment with more of the fabrics designed by Iris. With Iris’s guidance this will be a most successful course.

Carol Hocknell – Weaving the Audrey Palmer Way
Tues April 29th & Wed April 30th 10.00am to 4.00pm

This Course is an introduction to Knitweave the Audrey Palmer Way. Using Audrey’s techniques we will knit lightweight fabrics which are particularly fashionable in today’s climate. Various trimmings will be incorporated into the day too. Once you have used this technique you will be much inspired to knit garments.

Take this opportunity to explore your Passap machine and complete a garment (perhaps for the first time). This Course is planned to help Machine Knitters gain confidence and continue to produce garments they are delighted with. We do have some machines to work on but anyone able to bring their own machine would be most welcome. This does have the added advantage of getting to know your own machine and it’s own little quirks!

Carol Hocknell – Knit with DesignaKnit
Mon June 30th to Fri July 4th 10.00am to 4.00pm

Many Machine Knitters own both a knitting machine and DesignaKnit but have not taken the plunge to knit interactively. This Course is intended to design and then knit interactively for perhaps the first time. Once you have knitted this way you will go on to use the DesignaKnit programme over and over again.

Erica Thomson – Overlocking the Obvious
Tues July 15th & Wed July 16th 10.00am to 4.00pm

This Course is only for Students who have previously attended one of Erica’s Overlocking Courses or feel fairly confident with their Overlocking Machines already. Being Machine Knitters we have a ready supply of suitable and interesting yarns which can be used on Overlockers – hence the Course Title! Learn how to use these yarns including interesting stitches and techniques on both machine knitting and otherfabrics. In recent years, Overlocking has been featuring increasingly on the outside of garments. You can achieve many of these stitches with domestic Overlockers……etc. An exceptional Course to complement your machine knitting.

Suitable for all makes of machine. This Course has been designed for complete beginners or fairly newknitters, to help to knit one of their first garments successfully. Perhaps you have trouble with sizing, patternknitting or just lack confidence. Some times it is just a matter of having some uninterrupted time to knit! Lorrie Bryant – From Fleece to not quite a Jumper!
(an Introduction to Spinning & Fibre Preparation)

Day 1 you will learn to ‘draft’, ‘twist’ and ‘wind’ on using a hooky stick, drop spindle and treadle wheels of various kinds. Thus you will have mastered the basic method of producing yarn. From this you will go on to discover the different techniques of woollen and worsted spinning and card your own wool to spin your first half bobbin of singles.
Day 2 begins with a discussion of the Typed of Fleece available and the Structure of Wool Fibres. You will learn how to ‘Sort’ an individual fleece and ways to wash your fleece. You will continue to develop your spinning skills and learn how to Ply into a balanced yarn. Your own yarn could be knitted into a simple pattern of a hat/socks or mitts. The theory of dyeing fibres – both synthetic and natural will be discussed too.
Day 3 covers the technique of combing wool and worsted spinning. Blending fibres and blending coloured fibres. Spinning other fibres such as Silk, Alpaca, Mohair, Angora, Cotton and Linen. In other words a day to continue practicing your spinning skills while having a glimpse into the exciting world that using a hookey stick has lead you to.

Erica Thomson - Knitting (& Sewing) a Waistcoat Erica’s Way

The waistcoat has various techniques involved which include – Fairisle, rib work, lining with fusible nylon, cutand sew and making up with your Sewing Machine. Make a mini waistcoat to learn the techniques involvedincluding Erica’s superb edging and then you will be able to make the ‘real’ garment at home with confidence.The Course will end with the fitting and making of a paper pattern for the perfect fitting garment which will beyour very own pattern to take home for future use.
